UKCOP Students Named American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education Awardees

The American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE) recently announced the 34 recipients of their Pre-Doctoral Fellowships and Gateway Award for the 2019-2020 academic year. The Pre-Doctoral Fellowships support Ph.D. candidates and allows them to focus their time fully on their research project. They also offer the following specific-Doctoral Fellowships: the Dr. Paul B. Pharmacy Student Group Wins National Collegiate Chapter Award

This summer, the student chapter of Kappa Psi at the UK College of Pharmacy was the 2019 recipient of the prestigious Frank H. Eby Award. This annual award recognizes the collegiate chapter with exceptional academic performance. According to the national organization, the award is given to the chapter with “the highest percentage of eligible members who earn Scholarship Honors Certificates based on Chapter membership and their school’s grading system as determined by calculation criteria set forth by the Chapter Awards Committee and approved by the Executive Committee.”

Henson Awarded 2019 American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship

David Henson has been awarded a 2019 American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship for his project entitled: Modulation of antibodies targeting apolipoprotein A-I to reduce atherosclerosis in a mouse model. The award is for $26,844 each year for two years.

Pharmacy Students Win Bid for Regional Conference

The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy chapter of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) recently won the bid to host the 2020 Regions III, IV, and V Annual Conference in Kentucky. The local student chapter hopes to welcome over 400 attendees, representing 29 states to Lexington, Ky. The conference will be held at the UK College of Pharmacy and the Hilton hotel in downtown Lexington.

The time-honored tradition of the White Coat Ceremony has served as an opportunity for members of the pharmacy community to welcome students into the profession. Every fall, the incoming class of pharmacy students at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy is presented with a white coat to symbolize the beginning of their professional education.

UK Students Win First Place in Healthcare Quality Innovation Challenge

University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy students Noor Naffakh, Kailyn Conner, and John Brown took home first place in the Healthcare Quality Innovation Challenge at the annual Pharmacy Quality Alliance’s (PQA) Meeting in Baltimore this month.

UK College of Pharmacy Moves to Make Pharmacy Education More Accessible

The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy has eliminated the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) as a requirement for admission to their Doctor of Pharmacy program.  The college utilizes a holistic admissions process and has determined that the PCAT does not provide any additional useful information for selecting students likely to succeed at UK beyond that already available from prior academic performance.

UK College of Pharmacy Announces Partnership with Kentucky State University

University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy announced a new partnership with Kentucky State University (KSU), the premier HBCU of Kentucky. This partnership will allow students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a Doctor of Pharmacy in an accelerated time frame. The innovative 3+4 program allows participating students to count their first year of pharmacy school as their final year of undergraduate school.

Frank Romanelli Named Interim Associate Dean of Academic & Student Affairs

Frank Romanelli, a faculty member in the College’s Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science and Associate Dean of Educational Advancement for the College, has been named Interim Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs. Romanelli takes over for former Associate Dean Kelly M. Smith, who was recently named Dean at the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy. “I am excited and honored to serve in this capacity,” said Romanelli.
