From Student to Professor - One Alum's Journey

A graduate of the Class of 2010, Doug Oyler has dedicated his time pushing the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy further and educating future generations of pharmacy students. His journey began with his residency at UK HealthCare, where he later served as a trauma pharmacist, the catalyst for his opioid research. Oyler then developed the hospital's opioid stewardship program in 2016.

Pharmacists Come Together to Ensure the Health of Kentuckians

Pharmacists from the UK College of Pharmacy, Sullivan University's College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, and the Kentucky Pharmacists Association (KPhA) recently banded together to create a COVID-19 best practices guide for pharmacists statewide. As pharmacists around Kentucky implement the ever-evolving best practices around the novel coronavirus, they are also referencing these guidelines in their proactive approach in offering COVID-19 testing to patients. Many believe pharmacists will be vital to reopening the USA.

When Patient Care is at the Heart of It

Beth Richter is known for her unwavering compassion and patient-centered outlook. A 2002 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, her influence on patient care continues to have a global impact.

Embracing the Tradition of Unscripted Opportunities

Dennis Bashaw, a 1986 UKCOP graduate, broke the mold and demonstrated just how a professional degree in pharmacy could lead to an unexpected and fulfilling career. Pharmacy is an ever-changing career field, and with these changes, pharmacists are not as bound to traditional roles as they once were.

The Magical Years

I greatly appreciate the invitation to reflect on my seven years at the University of Kentucky. I wish I had formalized my views on these wonderful years shortly after I left Kentucky for the University of Texas in 1973. Almost 50 years have passed, and I have enjoyed successes during my 25-year deanship at Texas. But the seven years that I spent in Kentucky were magical and extremely productive for the College and our profession. We accomplished remarkable goals! How did we do it? What follows is my current recollection to the best of my ability.

February Feature: R you my Valentine?

We've got some great UKCOP love stories to highlight during the month of February. Even though we couldn't fit all the submissions into our newsletter. We got so many we thought you'd still enjoy seeing the pharm fam love. Let's get started!

February Feature: Love in the Time of Graduate School

Another UKCOP love story from Chandra Patel (PhD ‘06) who married Joanna Koziara (PhD ‘05). We hope you'll enjoy it as much as we did. We joined the Pharmaceutical Sciences graduate program the same year, entering in 2000. Our entering graduate student class quickly formed bonds of friendship. We tackled the challenging class load together during those first 2 years of grad school and into our qualifying exams. We remain friends and in contact with many of our classmates and faculty still today.

February Feature: A Summer Wedding

Kylie Newman Goetz (PharmD '16) and Nathan Goetz (PharmD '17) were another amazing couple that met at UKCOP. Here's their story as shared with us from Kylie. Nate says he first noticed me during his second year of pharmacy when I was presenting at a KAPS meeting. I was the director of committees so I would lead the KAPS meetings. I kind of remember him being at meetings because of his big hair (Nate had a large afro during this time).

February Feature: A Love that Lasts

They met at the SAPhA (now APhA-ASP) regional meeting at Wayne State University in Detroit in Oct 1973.  Duane was in the last year of the BS Pharmacy program at the University of Wisconsin. Marilyn in her first year of pharmacy school at UKCOP.  Their story was not a “love at first sight,” although they remembered each other. Duane noticed Marilyn as she had run for a regional office.  It so happens they ate a banquet meal at the same table and Marilyn has a picture of the table that included Duane.
