LEXINGTON, Ky., (October 1, 2024) — The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy (UKCOP) is proud to announce that Gavin Howington, PharmD, BCCCP, BCPS, associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice & Science, has been elected president-elect of the Kentucky Society of Health-System Pharmacists (KSHP). Howington, a respected figure in the pharmacy community, has consistently demonstrated excellence in his field since graduating a decade ago.

In the ten years since earning his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from UKCOP, Howington has risen to the rank of associate professor while building a strong reputation for his expertise in critical care and emergency medicine. His election as president-elect of KSHP is a significant milestone in his career, and his leadership will help guide the organization as it continues to advocate for excellence in pharmacy practice throughout Kentucky.

“I am excited to see such a talented individual stepping into this leadership role,” said Dean R. Kip Guy, Ph.D. “Dr. Howington’s achievements reflect his commitment to improving patient care, and his ability to engage with both students and colleagues sets him apart as a leader. We anticipate great things from him as he steps into this key position.”

Howington, who joined the UKCOP faculty in 2019, is also an emergency medicine clinical pharmacy specialist at UK HealthCare. His work, particularly in infectious disease management and critical care, exemplifies his dedication to advancing pharmacist involvement in crucial aspects of healthcare delivery. His combined academic and clinical roles position him to lead KSHP as it addresses the evolving needs of health-system pharmacy across the state.

“It is an incredible honor to be elected as president-elect of KSHP, and I am excited to take on this leadership role at such a pivotal time for pharmacy practice,” Howington said. “KSHP has long been a champion for improving patient care in health-system settings, and I look forward to working with my colleagues across the state to push the profession forward.”

With board certifications in critical care and pharmacotherapy, Howington’s leadership in emergency medicine and focus on improving patient outcomes through pharmacist-driven initiatives have distinguished him in Kentucky’s healthcare landscape. As president-elect of KSHP, he will lead the organization’s commitment to innovation and its ongoing mission to improve patient safety and care across the Commonwealth.

As president-elect, Howington will work with fellow KSHP members to expand professional development opportunities, advance practice standards, and advocate for policies that elevate the role of pharmacists in Kentucky’s healthcare system.
