Kentucky continues to lead the nation in incidence and death rates from lung cancer, and the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy is committed to reducing these numbers.

Bluegrass Community Health Center & UK College of Pharmacy Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Program

Bluegrass Community Health Center and The University of Kentucky (UK) College of Pharmacy have announced an expanding partnership to create a new pharmacy residency program located in Lexington, Kentucky. The postgraduate year two (PGY2) Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Program is jointly-sponsored by Bluegrass Community Health Center and the UK College of Pharmacy. It is the first pharmacy residency program at Bluegrass Community Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center and National Committee for Quality Assurance Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home.

The UK College of Pharmacy Research Publication Highlight for November 2016 was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association -Pediatrics and is titled “Rates of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Amid Efforts to Combat the Opioid Abuse Epidemic”.

UK Building to be Named for Former University President Lee Todd

The 11th president of the University of Kentucky, Lee T. Todd Jr., will now have a building on the UK campus named in his honor. Pending approval by the UK Board of Trustees today, the Biological-Pharmaceutical Building, located at 789 South Limestone, will be renamed the Lee T. Todd, Jr. Building.

APhA-ASP Regional Awards

American Pharmacists Association - Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) is a national organization dedicated to promoting student growth, improved patient care, and the profession of pharmacy. In an effort to enhance patient care, APhA-ASP has established a number of national patient care and community service projects aimed to educate and screen for various disease states ranging from diabetes and heart disease to prescription medication abuse and misuse.

We wish to remember and honor those who inhabited this Commonwealth before the arrival of the Europeans. Briefly occupying these lands were the Osage, Wyndott tribe, and Miami peoples. The Adena and Hopewell peoples, who are recognized by the naming of the time period in which they resided here, were here more permanently. Some of their mounds remain in the Lexington area, including at UK’s Adena Park.

In more recent years, the Cherokee occupied southeast Kentucky, the Yuchi southwest Kentucky, the Chickasaw extreme western Kentucky and the Shawnee central Kentucky including what is now the city of Lexington. The Shawnee left when colonization pushed through the Appalachian Mountains. Lower Shawnee Town ceremonial grounds are still visible in Greenup County.

We honor the first inhabitants who were here, respect their culture, and acknowledge the presence of their descendants who are here today in all walks of life including fellow pharmacists and healthcare professionals.
