Distinguished Alumnus John Piecoro Passes Away

On April 3, 2019, Dr. John Piecoro, PharmD ended his battle with cancer. Piecoro was a pioneer in pediatric pharmacy and was associated with the University of Kentucky (UK) pharmacy program for over 35 years. He started clinical pharmacy services in pediatrics here at UK. The success of the UK pediatric pharmacy program and the program, in general, was advanced by his early efforts. He served as Associate Director of Pharmacy for over 10 years and also held a faculty appointment in the UK College of Pharmacy.

Kentucky Team Dedicated to Substance Use Disorder Research to Speak at Rx Summit

A group of individuals from the University of Kentucky (UK) is part of a new team dedicated to substance use disorder research at the university. These researchers combined their years of expertise to ensure UK takes a holistic approach when addressing substance use disorder in the Commonwealth. Recently, select members of this team have been invited to present at the National Rx Drug Abuse and Heroin Summit in Atlanta, GA and will be presenting their findings later this month.

Everything is Science: Opposites Attract

Science is all around us — pushing, pulling, exerting opposing forces that keep the universe in balance. Join us for this year’s Everything is Science (EiS) Festival, Opposites Attract. It's a week of paired presentations, lectures and demonstrations that take a closer look at the yin and yang of science. EiS is a science festival that will be held at different locations all throughout the city, with events happening Monday, March 4th through Friday, March 8th.

Joey Mattingly Named Recipient of Prescott Pharmacy Leadership Award

Alumnus Joey Mattingly, PharmD, MBA, Assistant Professor, Pharmacy Practice and Science, University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, will be honored with the 2019 Prescott Pharmacy Leadership Award during the Annual Meeting of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) in Seattle, WA, on Saturday evening, March 23, 2019, when he will give a scholarly address.

UK College of Pharmacy Announces Partnership with Kentucky State University

University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy announced a new partnership with Kentucky State University (KSU), the premier HBCU of Kentucky. This partnership will allow students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a Doctor of Pharmacy in an accelerated time frame. The innovative 3+4 program allows participating students to count their first year of pharmacy school as their final year of undergraduate school.

J. Russell May Named 2018 Parker Award Recipient

Dr. J. Russell (Rusty) May, a UK College of Pharmacy alumnus and R98 in the UK HealthCare Pharmacy Residency program, has been named the 2018 recipient of the Paul F. Parker Award. May will receive this honor at UK's annual Parker Luncheon at the 2018 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition in Anaheim, California.

Russell Mumper ('91) Named Vice President for Research at Alabama

Dr. Russell J. Mumper has been named The University of Alabama’s vice president for research and economic development effective Jan. 1, 2019. A vice provost from the University of Georgia who previously led four research centers or institutes co-founded five start-up companies, and received nearly $30 million in research grants and contracts, Mumper was selected following a national search.

The Power of the Kentucky Connection

When Mary H. H. Ensom first chose to call the University of Kentucky (UK) her home in 1973, she was an engineering major at her father’s encouragement. Ensom’s father, Pete Huang, set an inspiring example for his three children as a distinguished civil engineering professor at UK. Nonetheless, her father’s passion for engineering wasn’t enough to prevent Ensom from realizing that her interests and talent were leading her in a different direction.
