Daniela C. Moga, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science, was inaugurated as president of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE) at the organization’s 42nd Annual Meeting in Milan, Italy.

ISPE is an international organization dedicated to advancing public health by providing a global forum for the exchange of scientific information and the development of research methods, policy, education and advocacy in pharmacoepidemiology — the discipline that uses epidemiological methods to evaluate the use, benefits and risks of medical products in human populations. The society has members in 53 countries and publishes the journal Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety.

“Real-world evidence is reshaping how we protect public health, and pharmacoepidemiology is the rigor behind it,” said Moga. “It keeps asking the two questions that matter most about any medicine — does it work and is it safe — at every stage of a medicine’s life, from complementing and strengthening the evidence provided by traditional trials during regulatory review, to monitoring how it performs once it’s in everyday clinical care. I’m honored to lead ISPE at a moment when that work matters so much, and I look forward to helping the society continue building bridges across academia, industry, regulatory agencies and patients around the world.”

Jon S. Thorson, Ph.D., associate dean of research for the UK College of Pharmacy, said Moga’s election reflects the growing international stature of the college’s faculty.

“Dr. Moga’s election to lead ISPE is a tremendous honor, both for her and for the College of Pharmacy,” Thorson said. “It’s a clear reflection of the caliber of research and leadership happening here. Our faculty are doing more than contributing to their fields — they’re being asked to lead the international organizations that shape them. That kind of recognition speaks volumes about the strength of our college on the world stage.”

Moga is the Larry H. Spears Endowed Chair in Pharmacogenomics. Her research intersects aging, multimorbidity and brain health, with a focus on using real-world data to evaluate the effects of potentially inappropriate medications and to develop and evaluate deprescribing interventions for older adults. She is jointly appointed as a professor in the College of Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health and is a faculty associate with the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging. She is also an affiliated faculty member of the College of Pharmacy’s Institute for Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy (IPOP).

Moga’s presidency adds to a growing list of UK College of Pharmacy faculty holding leadership roles in major local, state, national and international scientific societies, underscoring the college’s expanding global research footprint.
