College of Pharmacy to Host Symposium on Drug Discovery & Development

The UK College of Pharmacy will host its eighth annual Symposium on Drug Discovery and Development on Thursday, August 10, 2017. This year’s Symposium is in partnership with the College’s Natural Products Consortium. The Symposium will feature recent advances in the design of antibody-drug conjugates for treating cancer and other diseases, as well as advances in our understanding how Nature generates compounds that have been exploited in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology.

On July 10, the UK College of Pharmacy will welcome Mrs. Sandra Martin from the University of Manchester School of Pharmacy. Her talk will focus on pharmacy in the United Kingdom as she discusses the Emergency Department (ED) and Independent Prescriber Programs at Manchester University. Martin worked as a hospital pharmacist for 27 years in various specialist roles, including Care of the Elderly, Intensive Care, Acute Medicine and as a specialist Antimicrobial Pharmacist.

K'Quan McNease's time is split between studying journalism at the University of Kentucky and caring for his foster children. Most of their parents have abused opioids, he said, so the issue of the opioid epidemic in Kentucky hits close to home for him. The problem is well-known. Many Kentuckians are personally affected, and the epidemic —and the devastation it brings — is frequently cited in local and national news stories. But McNease wonders how many of those Kentuckians know how to help someone who has overdosed?

Bluegrass Community Health Center and The University of Kentucky (UK) College of Pharmacy have announced an expanding partnership to create a new pharmacy residency program located in Lexington, Kentucky. The postgraduate year two (PGY2) Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Program is jointly-sponsored by Bluegrass Community Health Center and the UK College of Pharmacy. It is the first pharmacy residency program at Bluegrass Community Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center and National Committee for Quality Assurance Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home.
