Everything is Science: UK Hosts City-Wide Science Festival

A group of professors and students at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, along with community partners like Keeneland and AllTech are working together to introduce the Lexington community to the science around us. Everything is Science is a science festival that will be held at different locations all throughout the city, with concurrent events happening Thursday, April 26th through Saturday, April 28th.

Anne Policastri Named New Director, ASHP Membership and Affiliate Relations Division

Anne Policastri, Pharm.D., M.B.A., FASHP, FKSHP, will join ASHP as the new Director, Membership and Affiliate Relations Division within the Office of Member Relations. The position will lead efforts to oversee relationships with state affiliates, among others, and to assist in membership growth and development.

UKCOP Alumnus Housley Named Assistant Operations Executive for UK HealthCare

J.J. Housley, PharmD, MBA, a 2011 UK College of Pharmacy graduate, recently moved into the position of Assistant Operations Executive for UK HealthCare. In this role, he has administrative responsibility for patient progression, including capacity management, laboratory services, post-acute care partnerships, case management, social work, patient transport, palliative care, hospice, and EVS. In his new role, JJ will continue working on projects to support and enhance the enterprise and further develop operational initiatives.

Alumnus Bryan Taylor Releases Harrowing Memoir

Bryan Taylor was married five years before his late wife, Kailen, passed away from breast cancer in 2015. She was 25. Taylor recently completed a memoir about Kailen, entitled Even if you don’t, which is available today on Amazon.

Brooke Hudspeth Helps Secure $7.5 Million Grant from CDC

UK College of Pharmacy alumnus Dr. Brooke Hudspeth was integral in the grant application on behalf of The Kroger Company for the expansion of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). Kroger Pharmacy began providing diabetes prevention services at their community pharmacy residency site in Lexington, KY in 2015 and quickly expanded to their Louisville residency site and other locations throughout the state.

UKCOP Students Initiate Letter Writing Campaign to Congress

The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy APhA–ASP Chapter is conducting a letter writing drive to encourage Members of Congress to support the provider status legislation. The chapter has generated 420 letters as a result of the campaign, and will try to get even more letters, according to Kyle Bryan, Policy Vice President for the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy Chapter.

New Study Looks at Effects of Binge Drinking

The UK College of Pharmacy Research Publication Highlight for November of 2017 was published in Alcohol and is titled “Increased expression of M1 and M2 phenotypic markers in isolated microglia after four-day binge alcohol exposure in male rats” The project was led by Dr. Hui Peng, an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the laboratory of Dr. Kimberly Nixon, Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences.  Graduate students Chelsea Geil and Kevin Chen as well as postdoctoral fellow, Justin McClain, each in the Nixon laboratory contributed to the project.

Kuhn Named 2017 Parker Award Recipient

Dr. Robert Kuhn, a specialist in pediatric pharmacy and University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy (UKCOP) faculty member since 1985, has been named the 2017 recipient of the Paul F. Parker Award. He will receive the award on December 5th at the Annual UK Luncheon during the 2017 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Meeting in Orlando.

James Cloyd ('76) Receives J. Kiffin Penry Award for Excellence in Epilepsy Care

James Cloyd (Class of 1976) has been selected to receive the American Epilepsy Society (AES) 2017 J. Kiffin Penry Award for Excellence in Epilepsy Care.

Joshua Elder ('10) Receives ASHP 2017 New Preceptor Award

The ASHP Research and Education Foundation will recognize the recipients of the 2017 Pharmacy Residency Excellence Awards at a special reception held during the ASHP 2017 Midyear Clinical Meeting in Orlando, Florida. This award program, sponsored by Amgen, Inc., recognizes excellence in pharmacy residency training through recognition of residency programs, preceptors, and new preceptors. The recipients of this award have demonstrated innovation in training pharmacy residents and serve as models for other residency programs and preceptors.
