About the Program

The UK HealthCare PGY1/PGY2/MS Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency is an ASHP-accredited program that encompasses a two-year experience of robust clinical patient care experiences through our legacy PGY1 Pharmacy residency program alongside a wide offering of management and leadership experiences within our high performing pharmacy department during the second year. Residents in the program also pursue a Master of Science degree from the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Graduates of the program are positioned to fulfill a variety of entry-level pharmacy administration roles within a large health-system.

PGY1

The HSPAL resident completes our PGY1 Acute Care Pharmacy Residency Program in the first year which prepares them to be exemplary clinical pharmacists with a broad knowledge base and ability to manage complex medication therapy needs. UKHC is unique in that it serves both as a safety net hospital and a center for specialty care, giving the resident exposure to a full breadth of patient care needs and challenges. The clinical foundation provided through PGY1 rotations allows residents to pursue board certification, if desired, and gain the experience required to grow as an effective clinical manager during their second HSPAL year. Please refer to the PGY1 Learning Experiences section below for a link to rotation information. A certificate will be awarded upon completion of the PGY1 Acute Care year.

PGY2

The second year of the program focuses on developing the resident as a leader, manager, and individual with rotations centered on skillset development in various areas of Health-System Pharmacy Administration. Residents will participate on interdisciplinary committees (e.g. Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee), develop and implement projects, lead process improvement initiatives, and be involved in major departmental decisions as a component of the leadership team. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to manage a functional area within the department (e.g. Compounding Satellite), thus giving them direct experience in supervision, workflow management, and collaboration with other area pharmacy leaders. The program also includes HSPAL standard components such as a research project and Grand Rounds presentation and rotation selection/sequencing is determined based on resident interest and career planning. The standout element of the UKHC HSPAL program is the level of longitudinal support and coaching provided by the HSPAL leadership team to ensure that the resident's experience and growth is tailored to them as an indvidual. Residencts can expect this year to be one of rapid growth and learning, customized to their personal strengths and areas of opportunity. An additional certificate will be awarded upon completion of the PGY2 portion.

Master's Education

This program includes the completion of a Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (with specialization in health system pharmacy administration) from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The resident will pursue this degree alongside leadership residency learners from training programs at leading institutions across the country. It allows residents to gain expertise in a variety of health system administration areas while also facilitating lasting connections with their future peers in pharmacy leadership. The MS degree is completed longitudinally over the two-year residency and is fully covered as a component of the residency program (may result in tax implications).
