UK HEALTHCARE Health-Systems Pharmacy Administration & Leadership
About the Program
The UK HealthCare PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency is an ASHP-accredited program that encompasses a two-year experience combining the well-rounded clinical experiences of the PGY1 Pharmacy residency program with management and leadership experiences during the second year. Residents in the program also pursue a Master of Science degree from the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Graduates of the program are positioned to fulfill a variety of entry-level pharmacy administration roles within a large health-system.
PGY1
PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions. The clinical foundation provided through PGY1 rotations allows residents to pursue board certification and gain the experience required to participate in clinical management. Please refer to the PGY1 Learning Experiences section below for a link to rotation information.
PGY2
The second year of the program focuses on developing leadership and management skills in various Health-System Pharmacy Administration areas. Residents will participate on interdisciplinary committees, develop and implement projects, and lead process improvement initiatives. This program will foster an environment of safe and effective medication use practices from a leadership perspective. A research project will focus on development and implementation of a of a process or technology in the Health-System Pharmacy space. The Resident will conduct an ACPE accredited presentation at the UK College of Pharmacy Grand Rounds, and work closely with the pharmacy leadership team to manage a functional area within the department as a longitudinal management and human resources experience. Rotation selection and sequencing will be determined on resident interest and career planning, along with preceptor availability. A certificate will be awarded upon completion of the PGY2 portion.
Master's Education
This program includes the completion of a Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (with specialization in health system pharmacy administration) from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The degree is offered collaboratively with residency leadership training programs at leading institutions across the country and allows residents to gain experience in a variety of settings, while also fostering collaboration in didactic education. The MS degree is completed longitudinally over the two-year residency and is fully covered as a component of the residency program (may result in tax implications).
