Four UKCOP Students Receive Awards from the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education

The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy (UKCOP) is proud to announce three Ph.D. students in Pharmaceutical Sciences and one PharmD student have been awarded competitive funding from the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE) during the 2023-2024 academic year.

McLaurin, Tidgewell Join University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy Faculty

The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy proudly announces the addition of two esteemed researchers to its faculty: Kristen A. McLaurin, Ph.D., and Kevin Tidgewell, Ph.D. Their extensive expertise in fields such as behavioral neuroscience, substance use disorders, natural product discovery, and medicinal chemistry will significantly bolster the College's commitment to pioneering research and innovative education.

College of Pharmacy receives funding to increase access to lifesaving treatment for opioid use disorder

The Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts (FORE) has selected the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy as one of three higher education entities funded to improve access to medications for opioid use disorder in pharmacies and health care settings.

In-person Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training

As stated in an email from the VPR, May 23, 2022, all full-time faculty, staff, graduate students or trainees (undergraduates, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scientists) who participate in research or creative work are required to adhere to the RCR in-person training mandate in addition to the online RCR course. Pharmacy’s Dean honored with Portoghese Lectureship Award

R. Kip Guy, Ph.D., dean of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy (UKCOP), has been named the recipient of the 2022 Philip S. Portoghese Medicinal Chemistry Lectureship Award. This award from the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry honors Guy for his outstanding contributions to medicinal chemistry.

Dwoskin to Receive National Award for Innovation

Dr. Linda Dwoskin has been named the recipient of the 2022 Innovator Award by the College on Problems of Drug Dependence.

Alex Flannery and David Feola Receive Inaugural Clinical Research Catalysts Pilot Award

Alex Flannery (PharmD, PhD) and David Feola (PharmD, PhD) recently received the $50,000 University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy’s Inaugural Clinical Research Catalysts Pilot Award for their research project “Urinary Immune Cell Profiling in Sepsis-Associated Acute Kidney Injury.”

We wish to remember and honor those who inhabited this Commonwealth before the arrival of the Europeans. Briefly occupying these lands were the Osage, Wyndott tribe, and Miami peoples. The Adena and Hopewell peoples, who are recognized by the naming of the time period in which they resided here, were here more permanently. Some of their mounds remain in the Lexington area, including at UK’s Adena Park.

In more recent years, the Cherokee occupied southeast Kentucky, the Yuchi southwest Kentucky, the Chickasaw extreme western Kentucky and the Shawnee central Kentucky including what is now the city of Lexington. The Shawnee left when colonization pushed through the Appalachian Mountains. Lower Shawnee Town ceremonial grounds are still visible in Greenup County.

We honor the first inhabitants who were here, respect their culture, and acknowledge the presence of their descendants who are here today in all walks of life including fellow pharmacists and healthcare professionals.
