Program Overview

UK is launching a PGY1 in Specialty Pharmacy starting in June 2024. Accredited by both URAC and ACHC, our specialty pharmacy sets a high standard in patient care with over 100 dedicated employees. The program fosters collaboration across more than 40 clinics in over 30 therapeutic categories. Our licenses across six states enable us to offer a diverse and comprehensive experience in health system specialty pharmacy practice, significantly broadening our reach. The goal of the residency is to provide the necessary training to produce a specialty pharmacy practitioner capable of pursuing roles in a variety of specialty pharmacy practice settings.

While the program focuses on enhancing patient care skills, residents are encouraged to develop their communication skills by teaching PharmD students in classroom lectures, pharmacotherapy breakout groups, and clinical clerkships. An AACP award‐winning certificate program in scholarship and teaching exposes residents to teaching philosophies, innovative teaching techniques, and accreditation standards.  Research is readily available and required throughout the program. The program encourages residents to pursue their personal interests while becoming well‐rounded clinicians by providing them with the flexibility to directly design their residency year schedule.  Each resident will give an ACPE accredited presentation at UK College of Pharmacy Grand Rounds.  A certificate will be awarded upon completion of the PGY1 year. For additional information on the residency and requirements associated with this year, please reference the PGY1 Residency Program manual.

We wish to remember and honor those who inhabited this Commonwealth before the arrival of the Europeans. Briefly occupying these lands were the Osage, Wyndott tribe, and Miami peoples. The Adena and Hopewell peoples, who are recognized by the naming of the time period in which they resided here, were here more permanently. Some of their mounds remain in the Lexington area, including at UK’s Adena Park.

In more recent years, the Cherokee occupied southeast Kentucky, the Yuchi southwest Kentucky, the Chickasaw extreme western Kentucky and the Shawnee central Kentucky including what is now the city of Lexington. The Shawnee left when colonization pushed through the Appalachian Mountains. Lower Shawnee Town ceremonial grounds are still visible in Greenup County.

We honor the first inhabitants who were here, respect their culture, and acknowledge the presence of their descendants who are here today in all walks of life including fellow pharmacists and healthcare professionals.
