Brooke Hudspeth was integral to the development of a local Diabetes Prevention Program, which has now become a model for diabetes prevention nationwide.

Access to a pharmacist creates an environment that helps people think proactively about their health. I can't wait to see what we can accomplish with this collaboration."

UK College of Pharmacy alumnus Dr. Brooke Hudspeth was integral in the application for a $7.5 million CDC expansion grant on behalf of The Kroger Company that will allow the expansion of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) to underserved areas throughout the country.

Kroger Pharmacy began providing diabetes prevention services at their community pharmacy residency site in Lexington, Ky in 2015 and quickly expanded to their Louisville residency site and other locations throughout the state.

Over the next five years, and using Kentucky as its model, the DPP will begin rolling out in four other states, including Ohio, Kansa, Alabama, and Tennessee. Hudspeth will serve as DPP Director with the responsibility of managing all aspects of implementation of this project.

“Pharmacy is an untapped resource to serve this population,” said Hudspeth. “The DPP will allow us to reach some of the areas that have a high incident of type 2 of diabetes. We felt that with the accessibility of community pharmacy, along with our proven experience in our local Kroger clinics we could really make a difference.”

Pharmacists, dietitians, and technicians within Kroger pharmacy locations will be trained to deliver the lifestyle change program curriculum to at-risk adults. “Access to a pharmacist creates an environment that helps people think proactively about their health. I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish with this collaboration,” said Hudspeth.

The innovative, hybrid model of care includes a combination of face-to-face, telehealth, and digital technology solutions that will allow providers to tailor the program to meet the needs of the participants and help them successfully complete the diabetes prevention program.
